COVID Time Loss

I feel that at some point, everyone has been affected by COVID-19 in some way. Whether it was not being able to see friends and family for a long duration of time, or family members and close friends getting sick, or even you yourself, we all have at some point been affected by COVID.

When I think about COVID, I think about the time loss and the memories that were never made due to the fact that we lost out on so much due to the pandemic. Something that immediately came to mind was the loss of my junior season of football in high school.

I played football since my seventh grade year, so I was not one of those kids that had been playing since they learned to walk. Because of the horrible coaching staff for those first two years, I really only began to learn and develop during my freshman year. So for me, it really felt like I had an opportunity to really learn and grow during my four years of high school ball, which meant that every year counted. Going into the pandemic, I was sure that by the time my junior year of high school came around, I would have nothing to worry about and would be able to strap up and hit the field after a long hiatus. But, as we all know, high school sports, and most sports in general, were cancelled due to the widespread COVID numbers and the devastation is was causing our country. I can assure you the devastation everyone in my community felt as they had just lost out on high school football for a whole year. It was like a gut punch really; to find out that we just lost a whole season. A season that we would never get back. It was definitely devastating to say the least, and it was something that will be talked about for generations.

For some people, that meant “chill time”. Some athletes took that as vacation and decided to do nothing with their newfound time. But for me and my small “community” of friends and teammates; it meant “go time”. We spent almost everyday at the park, training for next season. We spent countless hours lifting weights, running drills, watching film, practicing amongst ourselves in silence, knowing that our hard work would pay off in the future. I remember spending time everyday working with everyone to create scheduled times that we would all meet up and train during this pandemic. Coaches for Castle even started reaching out to train with them, although illegal at the time, and with them we set up meetings to start training.

For me, the COVID-19 pandemic cheated us of a lot of memories and time that we will never receive. But it was amazing to see the bounce back that became of that loss. Coaches, parents, and students all banded together to make sure that we continued training to better ourselves and to prepare for the next season. I witnessed perseverance and dedication throughout those hard times, where my community fought hard to make sure that the pandemic didn’t kick us while down. It was truly a blessing to be apart of such a dedicated community; one that truly embraced the “loss” of time, and turned it into something beneficial instead.
